Planetary strike cannons are surface-to-space defensive weapons systems.
Origin
Unwieldy, expensive and tremendously thirsty for energy, planetary strike cannons fell out of favour with most races after a short phase of popularity during the Hundred-Years War. Like most static emplacements, they are too easy to circumvent and too limited in field of fire to be a truly effective defence.
Most such systems have now been decommissioned, although some few remain in systems where upgrading defence systems is of low priority. In some instances, the emplacements have been repurposed as surface-to-air weapons, making a far more effective close-range defence against enemy landings.
